I’d go with a Singer Simple… it’s a basic machine for under $100 and it’s easy to use. I had hand sewn all my life and bought one a couple years ago and learned machine sewing in just a couple days. It has a self threader feature which is nice. It’s also not very big, and comes with a cover, so it’s easy to store in a closet. I haven’t had any problems with mine.
